Ask anyone who lives on the Mexican Caribbean coast for the best month to visit and most will whisper the same answer: April. Here's why the smart money books after Easter week.
The weather
April is late dry season: highs of 29-31°C (84-88°F), lows around 23°C (73°F), 7+ hours of daily sun and some of the lowest rain odds of the year. The ocean sits at a bath-like 27°C. It's hot enough for all-day beach, not yet the sauna of July-August, and hurricane season is still two months away.
The crowds (or lack of them)
High season peaks between Christmas and Semana Santa (Easter week). The moment Easter ends, crowds thin and hotel prices drop 20-40% — while the weather stays identical. Mid-to-late April is the arbitrage: peak conditions, shoulder-season prices.
The water
Dry season means little runoff, which means maximum visibility on the Mesoamerican Reef — often 20-30 meters. April is prime time for snorkeling in Puerto Morelos, diving in Cozumel, and cenote swims along the Ruta de los Cenotes. Bonus: whale shark season starts in May-June, and sailfish season is still on.
The events
April's calendar is quietly excellent — and the one to circle is the Caribbean Beer Festival in Puerto Morelos (April 16-18, 2027): 50+ taps of Mexican craft beer, 30+ breweries, food and music on the beach, with tickets from about $12 USD. It's the kind of local event that turns a beach trip into a story.
Sample long weekend (Thu-Sun)
- Thursday: land in Cancun, ride 25 min to Puerto Morelos, sunset at the leaning lighthouse.
- Friday: morning reef snorkel, afternoon-evening at the beer festival.
- Saturday: cenotes in the morning, festival round two at night.
- Sunday: beach hangover brunch, fly home smug.
